Nature Museum roots date back to the 19th century second
half (1864) and has been in old town, Lai street house approximately from the II World War
times. I am still wondering how to interpret wooded bog, coppice forest, wooded
meadow and alluvial. In the open marsh (lageraba) there were the most unfamiliar species
for me. One could also experience nature by him/herself: touch humid and dry peat, see
insects from a magnifying glass hole. There were some mushrooms too: pine nut
(männiriisikas), red and white fly agaric, chanterelle. Interesting fact was that the bird
singing got more silent at the covid times, because there were less traffic then and birds
didn't have to make sound intensely. Most rare showpieces were: common sedge,
Spanish snail, carnivorous water pea, yellow tapeworm, spotted ladybird (est. l.: harilik
nastik, hispaania tigu, lihatoiduline vesihernes, kollane paelöölane, kirju leedik). There
were exhibited also rare species like: flying squirrel, tawny owl, marsh harrier, pine cone
warbler, woodpecker, black stork (est. l.: lendorav, tutkas, soo loor-kull, männi käbilind,
metsis, must toonekurg). The plant exhibits are coloured, otherwise they would seem
decayed. Museum was in general very well done, not too crowded and with a balanced
amount of exhibits and artifacts, additionally it had interactive elements and a very nice,
professional guide.
Tallinn Botanical Garden is situated in one of Tallinn's 7 districts: Pirita district,
Kloostrimetsa settlement. It was situated already in the early 60s by the ESSR Council of
Ministries, where Moscow's eye presence was inevitable. Doors for the visitors were
opened in the early 70s. Tropics, desert, subtropics, open space greenhouses were
visited. Araucaria tree, Moon cactus are the oldest plants. Wanda and Papaya were the
most interesting plants for me. One may buy plants like silver tillania at the Orchid days
time from Tallinn Botanical Garden. Some interesting facts; Coffee tree is grown in Arabia,
in Ethiopia and Yemen. Vanilla in Mexico. Cucumber and also pepper is originally from
India. Rosemary strengthens brain. Banana plant is herbaceous plant - herb. Atlantic
Jasmine is Pakistan's national plant. Araucaria is Lebanon's national tree. Rose is the
national flower of five countries including Afghanistan. There were also turtle doves and
the Botanical garden organized nature protection and plant introduction period for all the
embassies in Estonia to be opened for cultural diversity and mutual co-operation for
Botanical garden's 60 anniversary.
